VoIP Gathers Steam
June 06, 2005
VoIP subscriber numbers continue to ramp up and competition shows no signs of abating.
TeleGeography recently joined a number of other
research companies in releasing its predictions about the VoIP
residential solutions market, estimating that the number of US residential
VoIP subscribers in the US will reach over 4.1 million in 2005, up from
150,000 at the end of 2003. As of March 2005, the number stood at 2 million,
meaning that growth will be great enough to double that figure by the end
of the year. Revenues for 2005 will total over $1 billion.
The Telecommunications Industry Association, in association with Wilkofsky Gruen Associates, projects sharp growth in the number of VoIP
access lines in the US over the next several years.
TeleGeography's prediction of 4.1 million residential subscribers is in the mid-range of other research's firm's estimates for 2005, which run from a low of around 3 million to a high of nearly 7 million. Looking further ahead, estimates vary widely, ranging from 12 million to nearly 30 million. Some of the differences can be attributed to differing methodologies, but the divergence also is a reflection of how young the VoIP market is. It's simply not clear yet how fast VoIP usage will grow.
Early VoIP player Vonage is still the leading provider, but it faces growing competition from cable broadband providers like Cablevision, Time Warner and Comcast. TeleGeography predicts that those three companies will account for one-half of US VoIP subscribers by the end of 2005.
According to data from Halpern Capital, Vonage has kept pace with or even bested the subscriber growth of other providers. For example, in the first quarter of 2005, Cablevision added 75,000 subscribers, Time Warner gained about 70,000, while Vonage registered 135,000 additional subscribers. Vonage increased its market share to 37.5%, while Cablevision and Time Warner saw their market share decline slightly.
