Internet Services Overview: The bursting of
the dot com bubble aside, huge and growing volumes of business are
done over
the Internet. The popular press focuses on retail businesses such as
Amazon.com, e-Bay, Expedia, etc. when discussing what is happening
in the Internet
space but much of the real action is taking place in business -to-business
applications and back-office process support. There are wide varieties
of Internet based applications that can be implemented for small and
medium sized businesses. The following are brief descriptions of the
services
required for these applications.
Business Dial: this service is very similar to the residential dial-up Internet service many of us have at home. Its maximum speed is 56 kilobits per second for both uploading and downloading files to the Internet. The primary difference between business dial service and residential service is how it is billed. Business dial service allows multiple accounts to be billed to a business on a single bill or as a line item on their communications bill.
Dial service meets the needs of many business applications and generally
costs between $15 to $20. There are services available for less but you
may find them unsuitable for business because of a limited number of
access numbers or a plethora of "pop up" ads that have been sold to off
set the service cost.
Typical applications for business dial service include general e-mail to customers and employees, support for mobile sales forces, low to moderate volume transaction services, and managing low to moderate volumes of e-mail and transactions associated with a hosted Web site.
